Northern Sotho (Sesotho sa Leboa in Northern Sotho or Transvaal Sotho), is one of the official languages of South Africa. This language is often incorrectly referred to as « Sepedi » (as in the constitution of South Africa) when in fact Sepedi is considered a dialect of the « Nothern Sotho » language.
It is spoken by Basotho people, mainly in the provinces of Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Northern Sotho belongs to the Bantu language group, itself a member of the Niger-Congo language family. It is close to Tswana and Southern Sotho (Sesotho). It is not a single language, but a continuum of closely related languages, of which Sepedi (or Pedi), spoken by the Pedi, is the most important.
