Afar or (Ge’ez: አፋር) is one of the languages of the Cushitic group, which belongs to the Afro-Asiatic language family. Afar is not classified as an official language. But it has many functions and is spoken in Eritrea, Djibouti (where it has the status of the national language) and Ethiopia.
In Ethiopia, it is used in national education and in the administration of the Afar regional state.
It is spoken by a population of approximately 1.4 to 1.8 million people.
